Johnny Smith, 1922-2013

June 19, 2013 in Makers of Music

Johnny Smith died last week. He was one of the greatest musicians and kindest people I’ve met. His albums and books are a huge influence on my playing. I highly recommend checking out all his stuff, and here’s a feature from the Colorado Springs Independent from a few years ago for more info on the man himself.

  • Doug Carmichael Saxophonist and educator. Currently teaching in the St. Vrain Valley School District.
  • Eric Ottem Jazz Unit Eric Ottem (trumpet and vocals), Steve Lopes (drums), Tim Carmichael (bass), and Vic Dillahay (guitar)
  • Graphite Addiction My long-running very jammy jazz band.
  • Guitars, Etc. High end guitars and more at Longmont’s oldest music store. It’s been home to my Longmont lesson studio since 2007.
  • Pete Ehrmann Percussionist extraordinaire, now retired.
  • Rich Carlson's TwistedDrums Rich is a killer rock drummer and teaches as well as he plays. He’s one of Colorado’s best, and Guitars, etc. is lucky to have him on staff.
  • Richard Ellis An excellent guitarist, teacher, and human being. If you need lessons in Longmont or Louisville, talk to him.
  • Tim Carmichael Melodic bassist. Fearless leader of Graphite Addiction and The TAC Project.
  • Time Guru The best metronome. Excels at odd time signatures, mixed meters, and metric modulation. Also, it has a random mute mode for really challenging your time-keeping.
